Yes – the Department of Veterans Affairs provides Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) as part of its Geriatrics and Extended Care benefits program. This benefit is available to enrolled veterans who need help with Activities of Daily Living, supervision due to cognitive decline, or clinical monitoring during the day.

VA adult day health care can be provided at:

  • VA Medical Centers with on-site ADHC programs
  • Community-based outpatient clinics
  • Contracted community adult day programs (for veterans in areas without VA facilities nearby)

Cost to the veteran: Copays, if any, depend on the veteran's VA priority group and income level. Many veterans pay nothing or a very small copay. The service is not available to family members of veterans — only to enrolled veterans themselves.

How to apply: Contact the Social Work department or the Geriatrics and Extended Care office at your nearest VA Medical Center. You can also call the VA's main line at 1-800-827-1000 and ask about adult day health care in your area.

Aid and Attendance pension: Veterans who qualify for the Aid and Attendance pension benefit receive a monthly cash amount that can be used toward adult day care costs at any licensed program, including non-VA centers.
