VA Adult Day Care for Veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) for eligible enrolled veterans. Learn what's covered, who qualifies, and how to access this benefit.

Veterans who need structured daytime care and supervision may be eligible for adult day health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA's Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) program provides community-based care that allows veterans to remain living at home while receiving clinical monitoring, therapy, social engagement, and personal care assistance during the day.

What VA Adult Day Health Care Includes

  • Skilled nursing care and clinical monitoring
  • Physical, occupational, and speech therapy (where available)
  • Medication management and health assessments
  • Personal care assistance (bathing, dressing, grooming support)
  • Meals and nutritional support
  • Structured activities and socialization
  • Caregiver support and education
  • Transportation to and from the program (availability varies by location)

Who Is Eligible for VA Adult Day Health Care?

VA ADHC is available to veterans who:

  • Are enrolled in the VA healthcare system
  • Need help with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, or mobility
  • Have cognitive impairment (such as dementia) requiring supervision
  • Have chronic conditions requiring clinical monitoring during the day
  • Can safely live at home evenings and nights with family or caregiver support

Cost of VA Adult Day Health Care

Cost depends on the veteran's VA priority group and income:

Priority Groups 1–6:

Generally no copay or very low copay for adult day health care. Most combat veterans and veterans with service-connected disabilities fall into these groups.

Priority Groups 7–8:

A copay may apply. The VA sets copay rates for extended care services. Contact your VA social worker for current copay amounts based on your specific group.

Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit

Veterans who qualify for the VA Pension with Aid and Attendance receive a monthly cash benefit that can be used toward adult day care costs — including at non-VA community programs. This is separate from the ADHC program and does not require using VA-operated facilities.

Aid and Attendance eligibility is based on wartime service, income, assets, and the need for help with Activities of Daily Living. Applications are submitted to the VA through an accredited claims agent, VA-accredited attorney, or Veterans Service Organization (VSO).

For veterans using community programs, national daily rates range from $78 to $175 depending on program type. See the Adult Day Care Cost Guide for current pricing by state and care level.

How to Access VA Adult Day Health Care

  1. Contact the Social Work department or Geriatrics and Extended Care office at your nearest VA Medical Center.
  2. Request a clinical assessment for extended care services, including adult day health care.
  3. A VA social worker or care coordinator will review your needs and identify available programs in your area.
  4. If a VA-operated ADHC program is not nearby, the VA may contract with a community adult day care provider.
  5. Confirm transportation availability and program schedule with your VA contact.

You can also call the VA's main information line at 1-800-827-1000 and ask to be connected to Geriatrics and Extended Care in your area.

Can a veteran's spouse use VA adult day care?

No. VA Adult Day Health Care is only available to enrolled veterans themselves, not to spouses or dependents. Spouses may be eligible for caregiver support programs through the VA's Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC).

Can a veteran use both VA ADHC and Medicaid adult day care?

Generally not on the same days. VA benefits and Medicaid HCBS waivers typically cannot be billed simultaneously for the same service. A VA social worker can help compare which option provides better access or coverage in your specific area.

Does the VA cover transportation to adult day care?

Transportation availability varies by location and program. The VA's Beneficiary Travel benefit covers transportation to VA medical appointments for eligible veterans. Ask your VA social worker whether transportation is included in your ADHC program or whether separate travel reimbursement applies.
