Does Medicare Cover Adult Day Care?

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover adult day care. Some Medicare Advantage plans may include limited coverage.

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) does not cover adult day care. Medicare is designed for acute medical care — hospital stays, doctor visits, short-term skilled nursing recovery — not for the structured supervision and social programs that adult day care provides.

There are two important exceptions to know about:

Medicare Advantage (Part C): Some private Medicare Advantage plans include adult day care as a supplemental benefit. This varies by plan and geographic area. Check your plan's Evidence of Coverage or call your plan directly to ask whether adult day services are covered.

PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly): PACE is jointly funded by Medicare and Medicaid and uses adult day centers as its core care model. Participants who qualify receive comprehensive care including adult day health care, often at no cost if they are enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid.

If Medicare coverage is not available for your situation, Medicaid HCBS waivers are the primary alternative for eligible low-income seniors. See Does Medicaid Cover Adult Day Care? for details.
